PYPT Supports World Diabetes Day (14 Nov)

YOGA PRACTICE FOR THE PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF DIABETES (ESPECIALLY TYPE 2 DIABETES)

Diabetes currently affects 246 million people worldwide and with a possibility of 380 million being affected by 2050.  The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that the equivalent of an additional 23 million years of life is lost due to disability and a decrease in quality of life caused by avoidable complications of diabetes.  The impact on families is bad, but on national economies is even worse. It costs nations huge losses in terms of lost productivity, resulting from morbidity and mortality.

Hence it is apparent that any intervention which positively impacts the prevention and management of diabetes has an important part in public health care. Lifestyle changes (including diet, exercise and stress reduction) have been shown to favorably influence the outcome in diagnosed diabetics. The ancient Indian practice, yoga, includes all these aspects of lifestyle change.Scientific studies have shown that yoga can result in several health benefits for diabetes.  Summarizing the findings one may say that the practice of yoga:

 - Helps to reduce blood sugar levels promoting normal glucose utilization
 - Increases sensitivity to insulin
 - Reduces the  levels of hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol which further increase blood
   glucose levels
 - Increasing feelings of wellbeing

An important advantage of yoga over other complementary and alternative therapies is that the individual is in control and no investment is needed other than a commitment to be regular in practice.  However yoga has to be taught by experienced and trained instructors and hence yoga classes have to be charged and are often not affordable for the economically weak, particularly in developing countries.
Patanjali Yog Peeth Trust (PYPT) in India has revolutionized the practice of yoga by bringing yoga to the masses, including those who are unable to pay for it.  The trust runs free yoga classes all over India that are attended by millions of people. These free classes have not just improved the general health but also have helped to reduce and control the diabetes for thousands of people.

The PYPT U.K. is providing free Yoga classes in the U.K. Recently they ran free Yoga workshops for Diabetes, where people got information on how to control diabetes and improve their health and wellbeing.
To mark November 14 as World Diabetes Day the trust is planning to run 100,000 yoga workshops all over the World.
